Field trips and community service projects run concurrently; you can only sign up for one field trip or one community service project.
1. Ockert Apartments, Shelburne - Fence painting
Brought to you by the Champlain Housing Trust, this is a light service project. We'll assist in painting a large fence at this affordable housing development in Shelburne. With 20 townhouse apartments, Ockert is one of the few affordable rental options in Shelburne. The development is bordered by a large picket fence that needs painting. CHT and the tenants, many of whom are elderly and on fixed incomes, are very grateful for the assistance volunteers will provide in helping the property look great.
Physical demand: light
2. LaPlatte River Marsh Natural Area, Shelburne - Trail Maintenance
Medium- Join fellow volunteers to help improve the existing trail at the LaPlatte River Marsh Natural Area in Shelburne. No experience required, just an interest in working in a beautiful place and a willingness to join The Nature Conservancy staff for this trail maintenance project. Conveniently located among the suburbs and villages of Chittenden County, this unique area is an excellent example of a lakeside floodplain forest and deep water marsh and hosts a number of rare and exciting plant and animal species. From waterfowl to songbirds, raptors, bears, beavers, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, LaPlatte has it all! Participants should come prepared to lug wood and pound nails!
Physical demand: medium/difficult
3. Shelburne Farms - Forest Stewardship
Mild- At Shelburne Farms our sustainably managed forest produces logs for lumber and firewood. Buckthorn is an invasive shrub that out-competes native forest vegetation. One of Shelburne Farms' forest stewardship goals is to remove the aggressive buckthorn in order to allow native tree seedlings (such as sugar maple, ash, and oak) to flourish. With 1,400 acres there is always a lot of buckthorn to pull. In addition, a January thinning of 10 acres of woods has left us with a large amount of firewood to stack for use next year. Come help us reach our forest stewardship goals!!
Physical demand: mild
